Software configuration of Ronja

Here you should read how to configure Ronja under your operationg system and maybe also how to configure the resulting digital data channel.

Configuring Ronja 115 Loopipe for Linux

Linux is the best choice for Ronja as it's free. (Of course there are many other free systems, like BSD, but I have no experience with them so I can't describe the procedure here for them).

As Ronja 115 Loopipe behaves exactly like a normal, serial RS232 laplink cable, it is very easy to set up the network. The behaviour is the same no matter whether you use the RS232 interface or IrDA SIR interface -- the IrDA SIR alwayes behaves like a normal RS232. At least to the software.

You must determine which UART is the Ronja connected to. Then find the appropriate device. For example, /dev/ttyS0.

Here are the necessary config files:

/etc/ppp/up.ronja This script calls pppd and tells it to use /etc/ppp/options.ronja
/etc/ppp/down.ronja This does a black magic to kill the right pppd. You can use another pppd for commuted line and they will work side by side.
/etc/ppp/options.ronja These tell pppd various stuff. Don't forget to change the IP address and netmask. The IP address is the IP address of the Ronja interface, the netmask the netmask of the Ronja point-to-point network.
/etc/rc/daemons It is possible this file is named somehow otherwise. Look after it in /etc directory. It is a file that contains the daemons to start up during system startup. Copy only the line /etc/ppp/up.ronja.

As soon as the other side swiches their computer on, the pppd's will talk and set up the serial link. It is also necessary to choose some IP adresses and set up all the stuff as in a case of any other IP Point-to-point internet link. If you want one of the computers to route the packets somewhere else, you must also switch the routing option in the make menuconfig (kernel making) and recompile the kernel.

You have to setup roting tables no matter whether you use or do not use the routing option in the kernel.

Configuring Ronja 115 Loopipe under Windows

I have no experiences with this stuff under Windows, but behave exactly the same way as if the two computers were connected together by an ordinary serial laplink cable. Serial laplink cable is a cable commonly used to connect two machines using three wires. Used for gaming, file sharing and so. Usually several meters long.
